What University Rankings Tell You, How to Understand Them, and Why They’re Important

The 2020 QS Top University Arab Rankings were announced in October, and Ajman University is now among the top 45 institutions in the region. In additional select ranking categories, AU placed 2nd for international students, 10th for international faculty, and  30th for employer reputation.

But what do these numbers really mean? Do they only represent competition between different universities, as might exist between any other organizations selling goods and services? How can students, parents, and job seekers use university rankings to help decide which school is the right option for them?

 Students

Students should ideally consider three categories in university rankings: overall university placement, globally and regionally; diversity of the student body; and faculty expertise.

  • Through the first category, students know overall that they are attending a university with a top reputation that covers all important aspects of learning from academic excellence to advanced forms of instruction.
  • Diversity of the student body is an equally important consideration, as students gain additional benefits when surrounded by bright and diverse peers who push their thinking forward and also lead to meaningful friendships and community.
  • Faculty are the backbone of a well-reputed university. Faculty comprise the leading thinkers, researchers, and teachers in the field, who can share their knowledge with the next generation, so they can build bright futures for themselves and society.
  • Parents

Applying to university is a coming of age experience not only for prospective students, but also for their parents. Entering university is a formal introduction to adulthood, and parents want to make sure their children are off to a good start. Overall university rankings help parents feel sure that their children are choosing an institution that can lead to a stable and lucrative career choice and provide a beneficial learning environment.

  • Potential Employees

A university is a complex institution that takes diverse expertise to run successfully, and provides young people with meaningful learning experiences that result in careers. A university with a high ranking is understood to be a great place for people who like to work in operations – from administrative professionals to human resource experts, to accounts, and much more. Those with office skills should make sure to include university job seeking sites in their employment searches for unique opportunities to work in areas that support higher education.

  • Industry Employers

Industry leaders like to hire graduates from highly ranked institutions. Universities that have earned top rankings function much like successful business – with strategic goals and outcomes. Alumni from universities, like Ajman, have seen first-hand what it means to work toward a common goal.

There is an increasingly competitive spirit between universities today as they each try to offer students the best academic opportunities and campus experiences. This is also reflected in the QS Arab Rankings as universities seek to show their impact on multiple aspects of developing young minds. In addition to academic excellence, Ajman University’s overall and select rankings demonstrate the institution’s commitment to its students through innovation, diversity, and social responsibility.
